Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 2026

Your Privacy Matters

Journal Insights, operated by Minotaur Mechanics LLC, is built with your privacy at its core. Your journal entries are deeply personal, and we treat them with the utmost care and respect. This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.

Information We Collect

Account Information

When you first open the app, a unique anonymous identifier is created and stored securely in your device's Keychain. We do not require or collect your name, email address, or Apple ID. If you choose to enable the horoscope feature, we also collect your birthday or date of birth, which is stored only on your device.

Journal Content

Your journal entries, including text, voice recordings, and photos, are stored securely on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. This content stays on your device unless you choose to export it or it is processed to generate a response, as described under AI Processing. Voice recordings are transcribed on your device at the time of capture using Apple's Speech Recognition framework. Photos are classified and scanned for text (OCR) on your device at the time of capture using Apple's Vision framework. The resulting transcriptions, classification labels, and recognised text are stored alongside your journal entry on your device. We also collect mood ratings (on a 1–5 scale) that you log through the App, stored locally on your device.

Usage Data

We collect basic pseudonymous usage information, such as app opens and features used, to improve the App. PostHog in the EU processes analytics, crash reports, and globally masked session recordings under a persistent pseudonymous identifier derived on your device. It is not your name or email address, and no journal content is ever sent to PostHog. All text and images are masked in session recordings.

How We Use Your Information

  • To provide AI-powered insights based on your journal entries
  • To send you notifications and reminders (with your permission)
  • To improve the App and develop new features
  • To provide customer support when you reach out

AI Processing

Your journal entries are processed by AI to generate personalised insights. On devices with Apple Intelligence, this processing happens on your device or on Apple's Private Cloud Compute, using Apple's Foundation Models framework. Private Cloud Compute receives the text of your entries, and a photo attached to the entry being answered, only to fulfil the request; Apple does not store this content, cannot read it, and does not use it to train AI models. When Apple Intelligence is not available, or a request cannot be completed, a secure proxy fallback is used; in this case, the text of your entries (never photos) is transmitted securely and is not stored on external servers or used to train AI models.

Voice recordings are transcribed to text on your device using Apple's Speech Recognition framework. Photos are analysed on your device using Apple's Vision framework, which performs image classification and text recognition (OCR). The resulting transcriptions, classification labels, and recognised text are stored with your journal entry and used to generate personalised insights. Original voice audio and photo image data are processed locally on your device and are not transmitted to external servers for this analysis. Separately, when a response to a photo entry is generated, that photo may be sent to Apple's models as described above; it is never sent to the proxy.

Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data:

  • All journal content is stored on your device and encrypted by iOS data protection
  • Network communications use TLS 1.3 encryption
  • Your anonymous identifier is stored securely in iOS Keychain
  • We regularly audit our security practices

Data Retention

Your journal entries are stored on your device as long as you use the App. If you delete your account within the App, all your journal content is permanently deleted from your device immediately. You can export your journal data at any time from the App settings.

Data Storage

All journal content is stored locally on your device. No journal data is stored on external servers. Pseudonymous analytics, crash reports, and session recordings are processed by PostHog under its privacy policy.

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • RevenueCat: Subscription and purchase management under a pseudonymous account identifier
  • Apple Foundation Models: AI insights on your device or on Apple's Private Cloud Compute, with a secure Firebase proxy when Apple's models are unavailable or cannot complete a request; the proxy receives text only and does not store journal content or use it for training
  • PostHog: Analytics, crash reports, and globally masked session recordings linked to a persistent pseudonymous identifier, never to journal content

These services have their own privacy policies governing how they handle data. We require that all third-party service providers maintain data protection standards consistent with this Privacy Policy and applicable law.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your personal data
  • Export your journal entries
  • Delete your account and all associated data
  • Opt out of non-essential notifications

State Privacy Rights

If you are a resident of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, or another state with consumer privacy legislation, you may have additional rights under applicable law, including:

  • The right to know what personal data we collect and how it is used
  • The right to request deletion of your personal data
  • The right to opt out of the sale of your personal data (we do not sell your data)
  • The right to non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at support@journalinsights.app. We will respond to verifiable requests within 45 days as required by applicable law.

Journal Insights is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the App. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
